Are you tired of cleaning up all the time? Cooking all the meals? Loading and unloading the dishwasher? Taking out the garbage? Doing the laundry or worse...putting it away! Well, guess what, you are not alone! It's exhausting, and never-ending and it's not even your mess! I'm going to let you in on a little secret...chores are not just for grown-ups! Kids can do chores too! Here's my top ten list (in no particular order) for why chores are great for kids.
1. It helps them learn skills and create good habits they will use their whole life. 2. Practice makes perfect (how else did you learn to perfectly load that dishwasher?) 3. It teaches responsibility. 4. It builds independence and self esteem. 5. Spending time together doing chores makes chores more fun. (I have many great memories of conversations with my Gramma over a sink full of dishes that weren't going to wash themselves) 6. Many hands make light work. 7. They have limitless energy, so put it to good use. 8. They learn cooperation. 9. Caring for their belongings helps them learn the value of things. (Because I have yet to see the elusive money tree they seem to think grows in the backyard) 10. And the most important reason of all...you want your children to grow up and be able to take care of themselves ( and maybe you some day.) In all seriousness, children are capable of a lot more than you think. They are always watching and if all they ever see is a grown-up doing chores, then they learn that chores are for grown-ups. Here are some VERY important tips!!! As your child learns how to do a chore, be patient. If the towels don't get folded perfectly, it's not a big deal. Martha Stewart will not be inspecting your linen closet but your child will notice if you "fix them" after they worked so hard to do the job. Be kind and appreciative. Saying "thank you for your help" to a child makes them feel 10 ft tall. Practice with your child, make it a special time. Someday your child will be a teenager and those chats over a pan of sudsy water may be more meaningful than you can even imagine. Lastly, make sure the chore is age appropriate. (The link below is an article with some age appropriate chores for children ages 2 to 18.) Please feel free to comment on this blog if you have questions or are interested in a specific topic. We love to share our tips and tricks. Have a great day!

Welcome to the Trainer Blog. As we begin to forge ahead on our way to a new normal at CYP due to COVID, we are welcoming new technology. Well, not new, but in our CYP world, new to us. As trainers, we spend most of our time in the classrooms working side by side with children and teachers. We don't get to connect as much as we would like with parents. During this pandemic we have been tasked with finding ways to connect with everyone and this blog seemed like a great opportunity to share some of what we have learned along our journey as educators. We hope to get interaction from you, so don't be shy, leave comments, topics you'd like discussed. This blog is purely dedicated to sharing information it is not a place to air grievances. That kind of thing, as you all know, must follow the appropriate chain of command. So without further ado, let's start with a tip.
This tip is one that can be and should be used with children of any age. Don't be afraid to apologize and fix a mistake. Children are often taught to think that whatever an adult says or does is correct. The problem with that is...sometimes we are not. It's important for children to see that making mistakes is part of learning and that we keep learning throughout our whole life. Speaking up when you make a mistake might be a little scary, or feel embarrassing but in the end it builds strength in character and leadership. It builds trust between people. Hope that's helpful! Have a fabulous day! |
